Ear Moth (Amphipoea oculea)
Ear Moth (Amphipoea oculea) - NFM 24 Jul 2024
This is an unusual and potentially rare form of the Ear Moth. Usually, it's difficult to know which species of several similar Ear Moths you have. The most likely in our area is Amphipoea oculea, but those orange markings on the wing are usually cream coloured in the various Amphipoea species. They also look rather misshapen for standard Amphipoea. Moth experts Sean Foote and Bill Mansfield tell me it's a "gen det" job to know for certain. So, I shall record as Ear Moth agg. Ben Sale suggests more like Large Ear or Saltern Ear, neither of which have been recorded in Cambridgeshire.
