Moths and butterflies

The Lepidoptera. The term refers to their scaly wings, from the Greek: lepido- meaning scale and pteros meaning wing. There are at least 180,000 species, of Lepidoptera around the world, with some 20,000 referred to in English as butterflies. There are an estimated 2500-2600 moth species in the UK and around 60 butterfly species.

What is the difference between a butterfly and a moth?

Many people talk about differences between moths and butterflies in terms of resting with folded or open wings, flying day or night, being brightly coloured or drab, having clubbed or smooth antennae. None of these distinctions are wholly representative of butterflies or moths. Indeed, there is really no scientific distinction between moths and butterflies. Asking what’s the difference between a butterfly and a moth is like asking what is the difference between a ladybird and a beetle. Ladybirds are beetles. Butterflies are moths. The distinction is a side effect of the English language. Technically, butterflies are just one grouping within the moths.

That said, there are a couple of physiological differences between the majority of moths and the moths we Brits call butterflies. In moths, the forewings and hindwings are generally hooked together by a frenulum but can be unhooked from each other. Some moths don’t have a frenulum but do have independently flappable wings. There is no hook system in butterflies, the wings cannot be flapped entirely independently. There is one known exception, the Regent Skipper butterfly, Euschemon rafflesia, of Australia.

While flying forewings and hindwings work together in all Lepidoptera, they are in a sense two-winged even though there are four wings. Moths commonly use their ability to disconnect their forewings from the hindwings to allow them to move the flight muscles of the forewings without taking off and so generate heat. Butterflies cannot do this so rely on posture relative to the sun to help them regulate their temperature by opening or closing their wings or adjusting their posture.

Actually, there is another rare difference. It is only moth larvae that can make silk and then only of some species to spin a cocoon to protect the pupa. There is, of course, one known exception, the Monarch butterfly larva can also make silk.

Little and large, old and new

The Lepidoptera are divided into the primitive but paraphyletic “micro moths” and the derived monophyletic Apoditrysia, which include mostly larger moths, as well as the butterflies. The distinction between micro and macro moths may have originally been about size, but there are lots of micro moths that are much bigger than some macros and vice versa. The micro/macro division isn’t about size it’s about evolutionary history, micro moths are more “primitive” than macro moths; they are farther back on the family tree. Of course, genetics studies tell us a lot about the relationships between different species, more than visual examination, and as knowledge expands we adjust the branches and twigs on the lepidopteral family tree to accommodate newly recognised relationships between species.

The Lepidoptera I have photographed over the years.
