Radio Love – a retro hit

I remember an interview with some famous popster back in the 80s, where he suggested that throwing the word “radio” into the hook of your wannabe hit single was an almost guaranteed method of getting airplay and heading for the dizzy heights of the singles charts. It wasn’t Geddy Lee – The Spirit of Radio. It wasn’t Freddie Mercury – Radio Gaga. Michael Stipe – Radio Free Europe. It wasn’t even Trevor Horn – Video Killed the Radio Star…

Maybe today, the word “download” might be the way to go, but hey, I’m a child of the 60s with a penchant for retro rock and late 70s/early 80s new wave. I reckon this one is definitely post-pogo but pre-NWOBHM headbanging. So, my musical love affair sits squarely in that camp with a nod to Andy Summers of The Police for the main guitar, R.E.M.’s ethic (Radio Free Europe), The Jam’s Bruce Foxton and Rush’s Geddy Lee for the bass style (The Spirit of Radio), Elvis Costello (Radio Radio of course), maybe there’s even something a little bit vaguely modern in this with a nod to Kings of Leon “Sex on Fire” (sex probably trumps radio).
