Cut and Pasted – a song

Well, I’ve covered death and wars, and godlessness, loss, unrequited love, addiction, gambling, poverty, all the cheery stuff, so here’s a song about the kind of brilliant person who ends up on the street, homeless. I was picturing an old hack not keeping up with the times, hitting the bottle harder until a fast-moving industry discards him like yesterday’s news. And, yesterday’s news ends up lining his boots as he crawls into a cardboard shack in an underpass somewhere…unable to cope with the urgent call to think outside the box.

Hey! Cheer up! It’s got a good beat…

Huddled down into a frozen place
Bracing for the cold it’s no disgrace
Even though they taught me how to play
I always played the game in my own way

Cut and pasted
In this empty box I’m wasted
Take me back to the time I really cared

Waking up to the fact we’re not living free
Never reckoned this day I’d ever see
Souls are never saved by worn out lies
Patching up the holes is no disguise

Cut and pasted
In this empty space I’m wasted
Take me back to the time when I really cared

I’m cut and pasted
In this empty space I’m wasted
Walk me home to a time I really cared

(All the space I’ve wasted, all the sweets I’ve tasted)

Michael on the songwriters’ forums had this to say about the song: “Wow, that’s a really polished production you’re showing us here 8) And a cool song as well! Usually the bass player in a band gets the least praise and attention, but in this song the bass line is actually my favourite part. For me it contributes the most to the general feel of the song. Nice work πŸ™‚ You really know how to retain the listener’s attention. There’s always something going on, aways something new and unexpected. I like that in a song. Worth listening to again and again. Another thing that stood out was the sorta anti-climactic chorus (this fits the song’s topic very well!)”

M57 liked it too: “I think the tune, the arranging, and the playing is great. Unique changes are paired with very accessible melodies. Really like the idea and execution of the lyric. I’m not that knowledgeable about drums but I’m fooled by the loops, they sound like real playing to me.”

Stova007 also had nice things to say: “Nice song, and the performances sound great. very interesting concept, and I like how the tempo is more upbeat for the darker meaning behind the lyrics. When I read your post about what the song was about, I was almost expecting a downer-type feel to it…but you had a nice surprise for me!”

A great compliment from HoboSage: “Wow, Dave. This is da bomb! I understand why you indicate this was recorded at ScienceBASS studios. One of the sweetest and coolest bass lines I’ve heard in a long, long time. Kudos. Bravo!”

Ferry0123: “The bass line is really strong and the growling sound is very cool. The combination of the acoustic guitar (very vivid) and the electric works very nice as well.”

Rick aka ClaireCreekProject was equally if not more enthusiastic: “Love it! Just heave me into the “like” box…. this has such a sweet groove to it! Superduper would be one word I’d use to describe the bass line in this little gem! I’ll just listen again πŸ™‚ Great one!”
