Lake District Stag

Back in 2003, before I went digital, I had a Minolta SLR and an awful steam-driven tripod. We were on a trip to The Lake District and one morning I got up fairly early and headed up to the nearest body of water. I pulled into a scrubby little carpark and was just gathering my stuff together to go and photograph the early morning mist over the lake when I saw this guy, a male red deer (Cervus elaphus).

He was standing, stock still staring at me from the other side of the car park in the early morning light. No time to get the camera on the tripod, no time to do any light metering or anything, just a quick point and shoot and he was gone, bounding back among the trees at the first sound of the shutter…
