As I mentioned earlier I took part in a vocal workshop with Pete Churchill and London Vocal Project recently. It was such an inspirational day with lots of great advice and so much fun. Here are the top ten singing tips I personally took away from the workshop and the performance:
- Get into the groove, feel the beat, get with the swing, get off the page!
- Be aware of what the other singers and musicians are doing, from the top
- Understand the “form” of the song
- Be aware of your breath, use your breath, it’s part of your voice
- Use the percussive plosives, the buh, pah, bah sounds
- Hold the consonants, make them rich, “Fall in Llllllove”, don’t “Fall in Luuuuuv”
- Start your oohs and aahs with a hushed “h” (h)oooooh, (h)aaaaah to protect your voice
- Hold notes longer by changing the vowel sound as your breath expires
- Feel and learn the sounds with your mouth
- Your eyebrows can transmit emotion across to your audience
